Religious revivals weren't on high in the United States in the 1920s.  The tide of moralism that had helped enact Prohibition had waned while the country was enjoying certain prosperity.  Popular preachers like Billy Sunday still embodied much of that spirit of fiery evangelism, though.
(The dialogue here is a little more reminiscent of 18th century Jonathan Edwards brand fire and brimstone, in any case).
